Kappad is located at about 15 km from Kozhikode and is famous for its lovely beach and backwaters. It was this Kappad beach where landed the first European trader and sailor, Vasco De Gama on 27th May 1498. A solitary pillar commemorates the event with the inscription, "Vasco De Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498". This picturesque rock studded beach is locally famous as Kappakadavu.

The main attraction of the beach is a huge sprawling rock protruding into the sea. A temple is also located on the rocks nearby, believed to be about 800 years old.
