Located at about 17 Km from Munnar, Eravikulam National Park is situated amidst the breathtakingly picturesque surroundings of the Western Ghats. Anamudi, the highest peak at 2695 m in the region, towers over the park in majestic pride and adds to its beauty. Set up for the preservation of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat, the park is spread over an area of about 97 sq km. Now the park is home of the largest known population of Nilgiri Tahrs existing in the world.
The landscape of Eravikulam National Park comprises of undulating hills, rolling grasslands, and several beautiful patches of sholas (natural forests in this area are known as Shola) that supports a wide variety of the flora and fauna. The green hills and rolling slopes appear like a velvet lawns and offer an amazingly beautiful sight to its visitors. 'Neelkurinji' a bluish purple color flower that blossom once in 12 years give a purplish blue sheen to the hills. During its blossoming period the whole Nilgiri hills region appears like a blue paradise.
Though, the park is world famous for Nilgiri Tahrs, it also shelters Elephants, tigers, leopards, jungle cats, civet cats, wild boar, sloth bear, Nilgiri Langur, Sambhar, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, squirrels, mongoose, snakes and reptiles. The Atlas Moth, largest of its kind in the world, is also found in Eravikulam National Park.
