The Periyar National Park is regarded as one of the most important Tiger reserves of India and probably the world. Located at Thekkady in the Idukki district of Kerala, the park is spread over an area of about 777 sq km amidst the scenic velvety hills of the Western Ghats with a beautiful artificial lake adding to its beauty. Its unique flora consisting of thick moist deciduous vegetation and dense evergreen forests, provide the best conditions for wildlife growth and preservation. The sanctuary, declared a tiger reserve in 1978 under the project tiger scheme, attracts tourists from all over the world.
Apart from Tigers, the king of jungles, the park is home to a variety of wildlife. The herds of elephants playing and bathing on the shores of the Periyar Lake and small babies running and playing around their mothers provide an enchanting sight to its visitors. Probably, the Periyar National park is the only region in India where you can spot wild elephants in their natural habitat from very close quarters. Other prominent wildlife here include leopards, Gaur or Indian Bison, Spotted Deer, barking deer, stripe-necked mongoose, Nilgiri Langur, wild boar, Panther, Wild Dog, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Lion-Tailed Macaque, Civet, Nilgiri Tahr to name a few with. The park also shelters some of the exotic birds such as Black-winged Kite, Great Indian Hornbill, blue-winged parakeet, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white-bellied tree pie, laughing thrushes, darter, cormorant, barbet and plover among many others.
